Detection Technology builds production capability for photon-counting detector solutions to Finland

Detection Technology Plc, a global leader in X-ray detector solutions, will build production capability for photon-counting detectors (PCD) to a new manufacturing facility under construction in Oulu, Finland. The small series production transfer from Detection Technology’s French facility to Finland is part of the company’s previously announced measures aimed at streamlining its operations globally and improving profitability.

“With the production transfer to Oulu, we aim to achieve various synergies. In the industrialization of new technology, the dialogue between product development and production is crucial. Furthermore, our new factory in Oulu has been designed and built for demanding electronics manufacturing. We believe that building production capabilities in Oulu, where we have significant product development, will enhance both our learning curve and cost structure,” says Hannu Martola, President and CEO of Detection Technology.

“We continue our long-term investments in the development of the photon-counting detector portfolio, as there is demand in all our markets — in medical, industrial and security X-ray imaging. The photon-counting (PC) technology will have an important role in the future of computed tomography (CT) imaging. Improving the material discrimination beyond the level provided by current multi-energy solutions will be important, especially in medical imaging. Moving forward, we will focus on strategically important PCCT detector solutions, where is the greatest commercial potential.”

Due to the production transfer, the company has terminated six (6) employments at its French site. The transfer of manufacturing expertise is underway, and the company’s new Oulu facility will be production-ready by early 2024. The company’s team in France, will continue its important work in the development of algorithms, firmware, and software, as well as in applying of X-ray physics in the company’s X-ray detector technology portfolio.
