Detection Technology presents X-Tile powered ultra-fast panel detector for industrial applications

Detection Technology Plc press release 19 June 2019 at 12:00 (EEST)

Detection Technology, a global leader in X-ray detector solutions, is presenting the X-Tile powered ultra-fast panel detector for industrial applications at the Digital Imaging and Ultrasonics for NDT 2019 conference in New Orleans on 23-25 July. The solution enables real-time video monitoring of material flow with a speed of 10,000 frames per second.

“We are proud to present test results and images from the world’s fastest panel detector designed for industrial applications at the well-known NDT forum. The X-Tile powered imager is 100 times faster than the panel detector solutions that are currently in use. This kind of breakthrough development in X-ray detector technology can resolve many of the real-time material flow monitoring challenges that occur in fast-paced processes,” says Eddy Inserra, Product Manager at Detection Technology.

“For example, our panel solution would be a perfect fit for monitoring casting fills, flow of liquids in pipelines and cavities, and capturing real-time video of running motors. We have built this system on an easily scalable platform that enables optimization of the detector size for a number of different applications. Our pioneering solution features ultra-fast speed and unlimited scalability, which opens up opportunities to utilize X-ray imaging in new fields.”

The demo unit is based on 24 pieces of the X-Tile modules that are 4-sides buttable in a 4 by 6 configuration. The dimensions of the active area are 210mm x 64mm. The plug-and-play type solution is equipped with an application-optimized data acquisition system (DAS) and a robust Gigabit Ethernet interface.

State-of-the-art performance is enabled by a pixelated, ultra-fast ceramic scintillator coupled to a high-performance backside illuminated (BSI) photodiode. The active area size is 32 x 16 pixels providing 512 channels that support simultaneous sampling up to a speed of 17 kSPS. The solution comes with a 24-bit ADC (analog-to-digital converter) providing fast, low noise and high-resolution analog-to-digital conversion.

“In addition, we see X-Tile based detectors delivering value for industrial CT systems. We have provided the strongest detector engineering capabilities for over a quarter of a century, and our solutions meet the performance and reliability requirements of the highest tier volumetric medical CT systems. We are happy to see that our track record also benefits the most stringent industrial applications.”

Product Manager Eddy Inserra from Detection Technology will present a paper – named Ultra-fast X-ray imager for real time material flow monitoring – at the conference on 24 July at 11:00. The paper describes the implementation of the ultra-fast X-ray imager and presents results from the initial tests. The company has performed the study with an American-based university, and its objective was real-time monitoring of the flow of liquid in a shedding cavity.
